Russia and Israel Close to Signing Pension Agreement
13.06.2009
Russian Ambassador to Israel Petr Stegny stated that the issue of pensions earned by Israel's citizens on the territory of the Russian Federation was raised and discussed during the visit of Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman to Moscow.
Stegny pointed out that, at present, a signing of bilateral arrangements on this issue is being prepared. Citizens who arrived in Israel for permanent residence before February of 1992 will fall under the paragraphs of this agreement.
Currently Russia pays pensions to 35,000 citizens living in Israel. Annual payments amount to approximately 33 million dollars.
In his interview to the Novosti Nedeli (News of the Week) newspaper Stegny noted: "Our consular department aspires to create easier conditions for pensioners who need to execute or re-execute their pension. Due to the particular human pecularities of Russian-Israeli relations, the consular department of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Israel somewhat resembles a social security department. And I like such a comparison as it proves that people receive help and support in our department. Yes, it does create us much additional work but cordiality of human relations is worth it.
Economic interaction becomes multipronged, which is, in my opinion, fundamentally important for the strategic prospect of relations between our countries.
Nanotechnologies, high-tech, cosmos - these are modern forms of our interaction, which, in its turn, will help promote mutual understanding at very various levels. Study of possible forms of energetic cooperation is underway, and namely of the possibility of Russian natural gas delivery to Israel: particularly now, your country is ascertaining the long-terms needs with due account for discovery of its own offshore gas deposit."
