Sefer Torah for Jews of Sumy
17.05.2010, Community Life In Dnepropetrovsk, restorative work was completed on a Torah scroll belonging to the Jewish community of Sumy, in the north-east of Ukraine. The restoration of the scroll was carried out by the National Sofer Center and was made possible by a donation from the Rier family, who are actively involved in the revitalization of Jewish life in Dnepropetrovsk.
The Riers were invited to be present when the final work on the Torah scroll was completed, which involved attached the parchment to the wooden holders, rolling up the Torah, and covering it with a beautifully embroidered covering, called a mantle.
The Torah Scroll will be delivered to Sumy and presented to Chief Rabbi of Sumy Yechiel Levitansky, on the family’s behalf. It will arrive in time to be used for the upcoming Shavuot holiday.
The Torah was prepared as a gift for the Jewish community of Sumy by the Rier family in memory of Moshe ben Reuven Rier and Nathan and Chava Koifman.
Both the Jewish communities of Dnepropetrovsk and Sumy are affiliated with the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
